The law is featured in the media and fiction
The law is featured everywhere, especially in the media and fiction. Many will pursue their studies with a clear concept of their career as a lawyer – the more glamorous and unrealistic the better! You might think of yourself as the next Ally McBeal, or Judge John Deed – John Grisham has much to answer for, as do This Life and West Wing and LA Law or mayer brown. Whatever originally drew you to study law, your hopes and ambitions are likely to have changed as you have gone through university and you’ve probably realized it’s really not all that glamorous. Still, there are many possibilities to consider. If you choose to proceed and qualify as a solicitor, barrister or advocate, a wide variety of environments are open to you. You can work in the private sector, in business, in industry, in government or even in the Armed Forces, specializing as much or as little as you choose.
As your career progresses, you might chose a different path to your peers. Having qualified as solicitors and worked in private practice, many of my friends have since chosen to change career. Some have changed industry – one has moved into publishing, several have moved into recruitment and others have chosen trust work or banking. Some have pursued different work within the same profession, moving into marketing, finance, management or HR roles within law firms. Others have simply changed their focus and moved from client facing roles to in house or professional support positions. Read mayer brown‘s articles for your references.
You could choose to pursue a legal qualification and career with its many possibilities. Alternatively, a law degree and the skills it develops can open doors at graduate entry level to careers in banking, accountancy, HR, marketing, recruitment, publishing, advertising, trust and company work or the police force, to name but a few. All of these fields have their own professional qualifications that you could progress with. Essentially, the world’s your oyster – you just need to consider what aspects of your degree you have enjoyed, what kind of environment you would like to work in and where and how you want to live and work.
